Creating the Perfect Baby Gift: A Conversation with Belle

What do you love about helping customers pick out baby gifts?

Belle: One of my favorite things to do at bornbaby is help put together a gift for a family with a little one on the way. It’s so special being part of such an exciting time in their lives. This is where we build our strongest customer relationships - first we put together their gift, and then, the next thing we know the customer is back in the shop with their new baby.  Now after nearly 5 years of being open, we have watched many of those babies grow up + have siblings, which is so special.

What are the key components to creating the perfect baby gift?

Belle: You will hear our team reference the well-rounded gift, consisting of something cozy to wear, something soft to cuddle, and something fun to play with or read. This can include: an outfit, coverall, gown, or onesie + a lovey, swaddle blanket, or stuffie + a book, paci, or teether. We always ask for a few details like the baby's due date and parent’s style to get a better direction for what the family will love and use. And the sweetest gifts always include a touch of our personalization. Whether it’s a team footie or a newborn hat with the baby’s name, it really is a special and cherished touch.  

How do you help customers select a gender neutral baby gift that still feels personal?

Belle: There are so many necessities that all babies love + need.  Whether it’s a board book, teether, lovey, swaddle blanket, snack cup, or something else, there are so many fun gender-neutral gift options.  Our shop is filled with neutrals, so it is easy to find outfits + accessories to create that well-rounded gift no matter the gender.  A basic ivory footie can become a super personal gift with an added book, lovey, or even hand-stitched embroidery on the footie itself!

Do you have any unique baby gift ideas for families who already have multiple kids?

Belle: Whenever someone is shopping for families with multiple children, we often hear them say things like, "oh they have so many of those things already” to any of the basics. This is where it can be sweet to get the new baby something a little more special, like a hand-stitched personalized item or a nicer outfit for special occasions. 

What are your top 5 tips for creating the perfect baby gift?

Belle: 
1.  Create a “well-rounded” gift.  This includes something to wear, something to cuddle, and something to play with.  Something to wear might be an outfit, coverall, gown, or onesie.  Something to cuddle could be a lovey, swaddle blanket, or stuffie.  Something to play with might be a book, paci, or teether. 

2. Know baby’s due date + where they live. This allows us to curate a seasonally appropriate bundle.  Some gift-givers like to buy the next size up instead of focusing on newborn or 0-3 months, so the due date and season are always in mind when deciding on the right clothing item. 
   
   
3. Keep the parent’s style in mind. Do they prefer more neutral tones? Do they love color? Or do they prefer more traditional pieces? We can help you find something for most styles or stick with a basic if you don’t know where to start.
   
   
4. Add a touch of personalization.  This could include a book that makes you think of the family, hand-stitched embroidery with the baby’s name or a favorite team, or even a toy meant to grow with the baby.  We love hearing personal stories about connections to the family, and we are always happy to share ideas for adding that perfect personal touch!

5.
